Santander & Cantabria
Cantabria, the best destination in Spain

Lonely Planet
Lonely Planet recently awarded Cantabria the second best destination in Europe and the best in Spain.
In Spain’s green and verdant north, lush Cantabria has caught Lonely Planet’s eye. Describing it as an “unexpected treasure” they cite its wild beaches, misty mountains, prehistoric cave art and lost in time churches as part of its magic and its great natural treasure, the Picos de Europa national park. Then there are the unique villages and towns, and of course, the bustling port city of Santander, coming to new life with its revitalized waterfront spearheaded by Renzo Piano’s Centro Botín, the extraordinary new modernist cultural centre.
OCU, the consumers organisation of Spain has recognised Santander like the best city in Spain.
Santander, the safest city in Spain.
There are plenty of museums, churches and public buildings that are great for exploring, along with an abundance of parks perfect for picnicking. It is here where you can learn how to sail, join a free city walking tour or simply hang out on one of the many beaches. This wonderful city is located in the north of Spain and boasts amazing landscapes, charming beaches, friendly people and is exceptionally safe for solo female travellers. Boasting about 185,000 inhabitants, Santander spreads along the bay offering a choice of beaches and harbours. In the 19th century, this city was a renowned tourist resort for Spanish politicians, aristocrats, and the upper class, and has kept its wonderful palaces, promenades, old cafes and its famous casino. Spain is a very safe country to visit. It is placed 17th in the ranking of the safest countries in the world, with Santander being the safest city in Spain for women travelling alone.
